Finding student housing in Stockholm can be complex. This FAQ covers the most common questions about the SSSB (Stiftelsen Stockholms Studentbostäder) system.

Applications & Subletting

Can I sublet my home if I study abroad?

Yes, you can apply to sublet your home if you meet the criteria. You can find all information regarding subletting here.

How much rent can I ask from a subtenant?

If unfurnished, you may not charge more than your own rent. If furnished, you can add a maximum of 15% for the use of furniture.

How do I apply for a free term (break in studies)?

You must apply no later than February 15 (Spring) or September 15 (Autumn) through the official contact form.

Booking Housing

Does being first to book increase my chances?

No. Housing offers are sent to the applicant with the highest amount of queue days, regardless of when they booked.

How many times can I decline an offer?

You can decline once without penalty. If you decline a second time, you will lose your place in the queue and all collected days.

Why are there no rooms published in the summer?

SSSB does not publish rooms with move-in dates in June or July because these are rent-free months.

During Your Stay

Do I need to be registered at my student address?

Yes. You must be registered (folkbokförd) at your student housing address throughout your tenancy.

Can I have pets?

Pets are allowed in 1-4 room apartments but not in corridor rooms or collective housing.

What about electricity and hot water?

  • Included: No extra action needed.
  • Not included: You must sign your own subscription with an electricity provider.
  • Charged on invoice: SSSB handles the subscription and bills you monthly for your actual usage.

Rental Agreements

When can I pick up my keys?

From 14:00 on the day your agreement starts (usually the 1st of the month). If it falls on a weekend, you pick them up on the following weekday.

What does “10 months’ rent” mean?

The annual rent is divided into 10 payments. June and July are rent-free, but you are still allowed to live in the home during those months.

How much notice do I need to give to move out?

The notice period is two months. You can terminate your agreement on the 15th or the last day of any month via “My Pages.”

Student Union & Queue

Why hasn’t my union membership updated?

It can take a few days for the union to register your payment. Ensure your email and personal number match exactly between SSSB and your union.

Is it free to be in the queue?

Yes, it is free to register, but you must be a member of an affiliated Student Union to collect queue days beyond the initial 90-day grace period.

How long can my queue be parked?

A queue can be parked for a maximum of 36 months. After this, the queue and all days are deleted.
