Finding housing in a new city is challenging. This FAQ covers the most common concerns for students at Linköping University (LiU).
Finding Accommodation
Can KOMBO find a home for me?
No. KOMBO is a tenant organization, not a landlord. We do not own any property. We provide advice, a listings database, and emergency housing in the autumn, but you must apply to landlords directly.
Is it hard to find housing?
The situation is difficult, especially at the start of the autumn semester. However, it is not impossible. Most students find something within a few months. Be active, open-minded (consider commuting or sharing), and check listings multiple times a day.
Can I get my own apartment immediately?
It is usually very difficult to get a studio apartment for the autumn term. Larger apartments (3+ rooms) are often easier to get. Grouping up with classmates to share a large unit is a highly effective strategy.
I’m bringing my family. What should I do?
Prioritize registering with all housing companies (both student and regular). Private companies without queue systems (like Victoriahem or Willhem) are your best bet for immediate family-sized apartments. You may need to arrive alone first, secure a place, and have your family join you later.
Queue Points & Priorities
I just registered; how can I compete with older students?
During July and August, student housing companies (Studentbostäder and Studentbo) reserve many units specifically for newly admitted students. In these cases, you only compete with other new students, giving you a much better chance.
What if I don’t have a Swedish personal number?
Many private landlords and the second-hand market (Blocket) do not require a personal number for the initial application. When applying, always include a brief, professional introduction about yourself to stand out.
Rent & Costs
What is a reasonable rent?
- Corridor rooms: 3,000–4,500 SEK/month.
- Apartments: 4,000–8,000 SEK/month.
- Lodger rooms: 2,500–4,000 SEK/month.
Student housing usually includes electricity, water, heating, and internet. Many also offer 10-month rent, meaning you don’t pay during the summer months (June and July).
Emergency & Temporary Solutions
What if I have a room from September but classes start in August?
You will need temporary accommodation. KOMBO organizes emergency housing from August to mid-October. It consists of shared apartments with camp beds and costs approximately 120 SEK/night or 800 SEK/week. Note: Children are not permitted in emergency housing.
