To ensure that student housing is reserved for active students, SGS Student Housing conducts two study checks (studiekontroll) each year. Failing to meet the study requirements can lead to the termination of your rental agreement.

What is a Study Check?

A study check is a mandatory verification process where SGS confirms that you are actively pursuing your studies.

Key Requirements

  • Minimum Credits: You must complete at least 15 ECTS credits per semester.
  • Eligible Institutions: Studies must be conducted on-site at the University of Gothenburg, Chalmers University of Technology, or Linnéuniversitetet.
  • Tenancy Limits: The maximum tenancy period is typically 6 years, with a possible 4-year extension for doctoral studies.
  • Post-Graduation: Once you complete your studies, you are required to terminate your lease. You can remain in the unit during the standard notice period.

How the Verification Works

SGS has a strong partnership with Chalmers and the University of Gothenburg, allowing them to automatically receive study results for approximately 6,000 tenants each semester.

  • Automatic Check: If you are a student at Chalmers or GU, your results are often verified automatically.
  • Manual Upload: If your results are not received automatically, you must manually upload your academic transcripts and a certificate of registration via “My Pages.”
  • Exemptions: If you did not complete 15 credits due to special circumstances, you may apply for an exemption when notified by SGS.

Important Dates for 2026

For the Spring 2026 check, the process typically begins in late March (e.g., March 23).

  • Notification: You will receive an email if your credits are insufficient.
  • Consequences: If you do not meet the requirements and are not granted an exemption, your lease will be terminated to make room for a new student.

Tips for a Smooth Process

  1. Keep Records: Always have your latest transcripts ready.
  2. Monitor Email: Check the email address registered with SGS regularly, especially during March and October.
  3. Ask for Help: Use the Housing App’s 24/7 chat or contact SGS Customer Service if you have questions about your specific situation.
